Its agriculture programme is the highest-ranked in New Zealand, and 19th in Quacquarelli Symonds' (QS) world university subject rankings.Massey's Bachelor of Aviation (Air Transport Pilot) is an internationally recognised and accredited qualification, is the first non-engineering degree to be recognised by the Royal Aeronautical Society (1998), and has ISO9001-2000 accreditation.<br /> <br /> The New Zealand Agricultural College Act of 1926 established the sixth college of the University of New Zealand (UNZ) at Turitea, across the Manawatu River from Palmerston North City. It drew from the agriculture departments of Victoria University College in Wellington and Auckland University College.<br /> <br /> In 1927 the college was renamed Massey Agricultural College after former New Zealand Prime Minister William Fergusson Massey who died in 1925 and had been vigorous in land reform efforts. The Massey Agricultural College Committee first met on 1 February 1927 and the Batchelar property, near the present Turitea site, was purchased that June. The college was officially opened for tuition on 20 March 1928 by O. J. Hawkin.Women were admitted from 1932, with Enid Hills being the first.<br /> <br /> With the demise of the UNZ in 1961, it became Massey College, part of Victoria University of Wellington (VUW). In 1960 a branch of VUW was established in Palmerston North to teach students by distance education, known as extramural study. In 1963 this branch amalgamated with Massey College to form Massey University College of Manawatu, and on 25 September, the Massey University Act 1963 made it an independent university as Massey University of Manawatu, with its present name being adopted in 1966.<br /> <br /> Inaugurated in 1993, classes began at Massey's Albany campus in 1994.<br /> <br /> In December 2010 Massey announced that the Wellington campus would close its School of Engineering and Advanced Technology the next month. Students were offered places at either the Albany or Manawatu campuses with compensation, but those who could not make the move and chose to undertake their degree elsewhere were given no compensation, and only a few papers were able to be cross-credited.<br /> <br /> The College of Health was launched in February 2013  with three broad goals: promoting health and wellbeing, disease and injury prevention and protecting people and communities from environmental risks to health.<br /> <br /> Massey University has campuses in the Manawatu at Palmerston North (sites at Turitea and Hokowhitu), at Wellington (in the suburb of Mt Cook) and on Auckland's North Shore at Albany. In addition, Massey offers most of its degrees extramurally within New Zealand and internationally. It has the nation's largest business college. The neo-gothic buildings of the old campus became the site of the Christchurch Arts Centre, a hub for arts, crafts and entertainment in Christchurch.<br /> <br /> In 2004, the University underwent restructuring into four Colleges and a School of Law, administering a number of schools and departments (though a number of departments have involvement in cross-teaching in numerous academic faculties). For many years the university worked closely with the Christchurch College of Education, leading to a full merger in 2007, establishing a fifth College.<br /> <br /> In September 2011, plans were announced to demolish some University buildings that were damaged from an earthquake.In the months following the earthquake, the University lost 25 per cent of its first-year students and 8 per cent of continuing students. The number of international students, who pay much higher fees and are a major source of revenue, dropped by 30 per cent.By 2013, the University had lost 22 per cent of its students, leading a former student, visiting the University.However, a record number of 886 PhD students are enrolled at the University of Canterbury as of 2013.<br /> <br /> Other New Zealand universities, apparently defying an informal agreement, launched billboard and print advertising campaigns in the earthquake-ravaged city to recruit University of Canterbury students who are finding it difficult to study there.In October 2011, staff were encouraged to take voluntary redundancies.<br /> <br /> The university was first governed by a board of governors (1873–1933), then by a college council (1933–1957), and since 1957 by a university council.The council is chaired by a chancellor.The Council includes representatives from the faculties, students and general staff, as well as local industry, employer and trade union representatives.<br /> <br /> The original composition of the board of governors was defined in the Canterbury College Ordinance 1873, which was passed by the Canterbury Provincial Council and named 23 members who might serve for life. Initially, the board was given power to fill their own vacancies, and this power transferred to graduates once their number exceeded 30.At the time, there were discussions about the abolition of provincial government (which did happen in 1876), and the governance structure was set up to give board members "prestige, power and permanence", and "provincial authority and its membership and resources were safely perpetuated, beyond the reach of grasping hands in Wellington."<br /> <br /> Original members of the Board of Governors were:Charles Bowen, Rev James Buller,William Patten Cowlishaw,John Davies Enys,Charles Fraser, George Gould Sr,Henry Barnes Gresson,William Habens, John Hall, Henry Harper, John Inglis,Walter Kennaway,Arthur C. On 15 October 2008 the University announced that Dr Rod Carr, a former banker and the CEO of a local software company, would begin a five-year appointment as Vice-Chancellor on 1 February 2009.Under Carr's leadership, UC's position in the QS World University Rankings has steadily declined by about 30%, as of September 2014 (for detail, see section headed 'League Tables', below).<br /> <br /> Council member and former Pro-Chancellor, Rex Williams, became Chancellor in 2009.Council member Dr John Wood became the new Pro-Chancellor. The edge ("edged") of the book and the binding of the book is in gold ("Or") and it is bound with seven clasps on either side which would close the book securely when closed. These clasps are also gold. A "chief" is a broad strip at the top of the shield but "wavy" means that the base of the chief is in a wave like line. The colour of the chief is silver ("argent"). On the chief are three kiwis and "proper" means that’s they are shown in their natural colour.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> The university's motto is Ingenio et labore which may be translated from Latin as "By natural ability and hard work.</div> </div> <div> <div> Since eliminating open entry in 2009, all applicants must have a university entrance qualification. Domestic students are required to achieve the NZQA University Entrance Standard, while international students must achieve an equivalent approved qualification in their country.Admission to the University also requires applicants to meet the preset academic and English language entry requirements specific to the degree for which they are applying.Some programmes also have a preset number of places available within the degree.
